The Skill of Blogging

In New New Media by Paul Levinson, there is a discussion considering the power of blogging. Not only does the experience bring excitement and a feeling of importance to the blogger, but also the feedback can be immensely rewarding. Having read the chapter discussing blogging, it gives me a new view of the phenomenon.

I have personally only blogged as a part of class last semester and this semester and have never really seen the true lure of the practice. I'm sure for people who have influence or great knowledge of a certain area or topic, blogging can be a great tool for them as Levinson suggests. I have become more and more tempted to create a blog, but remain unsure of what I could ever offer the internet community because it would otherwise be pointless to create a site that doesn't help anyone in any way.

Blogging has become a culture of its own world-wide and will continue to grow, the question the blog culture seems to be asking is, can you offer anything with your own?

  1. I think that anyone who puts their mind to it can create a successful blog with a little persistence and perseverance. Just browsing the types of blogs out there, some have become successful with blogs about the most random things. This fact gives me hope at least, that though I'd rather not blog about something too abstract, but that even I have the potential to make a significant contribution to the online community.

  2. I feel that considering such a question is common and instinctual. Even concerning our contributions to the world, many wonder if their efforts can make a difference. Anyone can create a blog. It doesn't necessarily have to be insightful or complex to be effective. Blogging can be used as a way to simply clear one's mind. In such a way, the blogger is benefiting from their work and others may relate to it as well.

  3. I think it reflects well on you that you hesitate and don't want to create a blog until you feel that you're ready. One reason to do it, though, is to learn about the medium itself. Another, as Sheena points out, is self-exploration. And there's also communicating with family and friends. Then there's self-expression, a creative outlet. And of course, if you have something to say, some arena you want to participate in, some area of expertise you want to share, or some career need, then the motivation is pretty clear.
